offer pulled after attempt to negotiate
has anyone ever have their offer pulled/the firm decided to just give the job to the next person in line, after they tried to ask for more money? (not an egregious amount, but something like a signing bonus/relocation/slight bump to all-in)
They're highly unlikely to pull, but most likely they'll just say no, and you may ruffle some feathers (lightly) if you ask for too much and/or completely off-market terms.
For the most part, these offers are standardized and things like signing bonus (not market to receive one) and base/bonus (typically fixed within an associate cohort of offers and highly benchmarked) are not negotiable. Relocation is the most reasonable ask in your list.
cool. i communicated through HH and just haven't heard back from firm since 24+ hrs ago...thought this would be fast (no matter whether they say yes or no) considering it's a small firm. also expressed that i'm highly leaning towards accepting but want to see if they can do relocation or small bump in base. didn't propose a number - pretty much just left it for them to give me a number. i saw the CFO took a look at my linkedin profile last night, so just wondering what's been going on/why I'm not getting any update.
It’s a holiday week just chill and break out a cold one dawg I’m sure you’ll be all set by next week
If a normal ask like signing bonus/relo/small bump that is totally fine. Worth a try. I think they would only pull it if you asked for something truly ridiculous / way out of the discussed range.
These things can take a while to be approved internally - like up to a week sometimes. I would sit tight and follow up after the holiday but I would not be thinking they pulled the offer
yea they just gave me a small relo. should i ask them to put it in writing/send me an updated offer letter to sign, or does it not matter/i can just sign the original letter?
Always get things in writing, it will not upset anyone to ask for updated offer if they changed it.
Just adding onto the last point here. Went through a process recently and it took 2 weeks from verbal offer to a written one due to comp offer changes. Depending on the size and structure of the firm, their HR team, treasury, checks they need to do (e.g., your prior comp structure) etc. it can take some time for it to be considered, approved and put on paper. Wouldn’t sweat it too much unless you asked for something wild.
