Offer Timing - Off-cycle Lateral

Title implies it, but the gist of the situation is I had a final round for an associate level spot than ran late into Friday evening and I'm trying to wrap my ahead around what I should expect in terms of timing of an answer? The process was otherwise very quick (coffee chat 2 weeks ago for a role that didn't otherwise exist, chat went well enough to run me through a process, 2nd and 3rd rounds last week) so should I expect an equally quick answer or, if an offer is inbound are there HR hoops that need to be jumped through given there wasn't yet a formal opening?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the timing for an offer can vary greatly depending on the firm and the specific situation. In some cases, offers can be made within a few days of the final round of interviews. For example, in the case of JPM Coverage (TMT/FIG), an offer was received the next day after the Superday. Similarly, for a lateral hire process, an offer was made within 3 days after the final round.

However, it's also important to note that sometimes there can be delays due to various reasons. For instance, there might be internal changes within the group or the hiring process might be shut down temporarily. In such cases, it might take longer to receive an offer.

In your case, since the role didn't exist before and there wasn't a formal opening, there might be some additional HR processes that need to be completed before an offer can be made. This could potentially delay the offer.

Remember, patience is key in these situations. If you haven't heard back within a week or so, it might be a good idea to follow up with the firm. Good luck, and I hope you hear some positive news soon!
