Oil Trading Path

I am a rising sophomore and I am interested in oil markets. I think trading would be a very interesting career so I am wondering common paths for oil traders. If I do not join an energy group in IB, what are other paths? Is it common for people to start at actual oil companies or is that quite rare?

Thanks for the help.
