Pathway to Infrastructure Investments

Hi,

Currently at Big 4 doing financial and commercial advisory within infrastructure. Have been approached a by a large global financial institution to do an interview for its project finance arm.

However, the role isn't within their origination team but with their portfolio management team, which would involve a lot more credit analysis rather than pure transaction experience.

I want to eventually end up working in an investment role within infrastructure and see this role as a step up to understanding how debts are structured within infra, gaining more relevant 'transaction' experience and being involved across all infra projects.

Any thoughts? Or are there better pathways?

The problem with portfolio roles is that you're yet again stuck for a few years trying to move out of there and in some ways, your optionality is actually worse off than being in Big4 infra advisory since you're now doing middle office at a bank.

If you're getting interviews in PF portfolio than you might as well keep pushing for PF origination and all the other infra investing roles (developers, corporates, IB ,etc). All of those take Big4 infra candidates now and then.

Thanks for the reply!  That was my thinking too in regards to feeling stuck for another period of time, chasing the relevant experience.

I will definitely keep pushing for those roles and in the mean time, will take on this interview for some interviewing experience.
