Pivoting Out of Back Office (Investor Comms at Credit Firm). Advice on Breaking Into Finance Roles (IB, Credit, Corp Fin, etc.)

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for guidance on how to pivot into a finance-facing role, whether that’s corporate banking, corporate finance, investment banking, credit analysis, or anything that offers real financial exposure. I’m open-minded and eager. My goal is to build meaningful analytical skills and contribute to something tied to revenue generation.

Currently, I’m full-time at a private credit firm in an investor communications role. The work is entirely internal, focused on performance reporting, servicing logistics, and operations. It’s non-revenue-generating, and I’m gaining no exposure to modeling, transactions, or analytical finance. It’s fully back office, and not a path I ever intended to take.

In the past few weeks:

  • I’ve cold emailed over 100 professionals across IB, credit, corporate finance, and corporate banking using RocketReach and LinkedIn
  • Had a few networking calls, mostly with prior connections, but nothing has progressed
  • Applied to dozens of roles, tailored each application, but have seen no traction so far

Background:

  • B.S. in Finance and Business Analytics from Indiana University (Kelley), 3.5 GPA
  • President of a professional business fraternity
  • Involved in two finance-focused student organizations
  • Three internships: one in accounting, one in wealth management, and one in data analytics

I’ve always been proactive and well-rounded, but I haven’t found the right entry point into front-office finance.

Truthfully, I’m not sure what I should be doing differently. I’m open to any advice or feedback.

  • How do I break out of the back-office narrative?
  • How do I position myself better, whether on paper, in conversations, or through outreach?
  • Are there firms or groups that may be more open to my background?
  • What should I be doing right now in terms of technical prep, certifications, or strategy to build credibility? (SIE, FMVA, etc.)
  • Has anyone made a similar transition successfully? If so, how?

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share insights. I’m eager to learn and open to being coached.
