Pls Help: Ex-IB > Product > No Idea What To Do...

Hey guys - former Chimp here (grad in Finance from a target school) who used to LIVE on WSO before/as I spent my first two years in IB. Unfortunately, my IB experience coincided with COVID and as we all know, certain groups had it bad. Mine had it bad. Worked in M&A groups at two banks (1 year each) where I felt I had to leave.

Fast forward three years, post-IB, I went into BizOps at a Series B, then PM (current role) at a small startup. I've been at this company for two years - very comfy WLB, but I feel like I am going NOWHERE with my career. Compared to how passionately I could talk about my job / deals back in the day, I feel like an imposter in the tech world, not caring / just not understanding the markets. I just do my job, get paid, and live to see another day.

I want to pivot back into Finance, not sure how I qualify as an applicant now though. My ideal goal would be buy-side (PE/VC) knowing I have ~2 years IB and now some operating experience under my belt as well. The thing is, back in the day I used HHs for everything - after a general LinkedIn Jobs sweep, I feel like I've got a muddled story for every role. Should I go MBA? Should I get back in touch with old HHs? Should I just keep applying to Finance gigs on LinkedIn?

Please help... feeling so stuck.

Why not all of the above? If you're serious I would explore and exhaust every possible branch of the tree: keep throwing in CVs, network with/ cold email recruiters & alums, even do an MBA -- These are not mutually exclusive, and no real opportunity cost at this point in the grand scheme. Sounds like the consulting route could also be a possibility as a last resort, could that be an option? Would be the one industry where your previous work experience won't have a heavy weight.

your background looks good to move into VC, but you're also young enough to get an MBA. VC hiring markets aren't great right now considering the fundraising environment though.

Your career has been all over the place and you haven't found what you want to do after 4ish years...I think that's fine, but you should consider doing an MBA if you want to continue this discovery period. Plus it'll be fun!
