"Preferred Candidate Identified For This Position" Why post

I hope I don't get thrown MS for this because I am genuinely curious. I came across a job posting that had in the description "Preferred Candidate Identified For This Position." Why are both including that? I understand they may still need to post for compliance reasons, but why say they already have someone?

Analyst 1 in IB - Cov:

You saw that TD m&a posting too eh lmao

I don’t understand it

Associate 3 in IB-M&A:

It's for internal hires, usually with visa issues - they often have to legally post the job and interview citizens who apply

I think that line is just meant as a warning to candidates - they aren't seriously hiring so don't waste time applying and networking

Thanks you I appreciate the heads up. Knew I wasn’t gonna get it but just thought it was so strange and wanted to ask.

Just a well known loophole really. Totally agree it's not in good faith, but IMO better to do this and tell people not to apply, than to drag people through the interview process with no intention of hiring them

You also see companies asking for wildly specific requirements to fulfill the same posting laws for a known internal hire (ie requirements: 12 years of experience running XYZ solution that is internal to CompanyName)

Yeah the posting is down they are not going to be interviewing anyone.
