Pushing for quick final round decision using an exploding offer
I have final round for a position on Thursday (A), and just got an offer elsewhere that expires the next Monday (B).
I’m planning to email HR of the Thursday firm (A) to ask if they can give me a quick decision following my interview, using the exploding offer’s (B) deadline as a bit of pressure. Before this, I used B’s verbal offer to accelerate my previous round at A, and told A I’d keep them informed of any updates.
Is this advisable, and do I need to show actual proof of this offer (eg attaching it or a screenshot of the deadline)?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your approach is generally sound, but there are a few nuances to consider:
Communicating with HR: It’s perfectly reasonable to inform HR at Firm A about the deadline for your offer from Firm B. Politely explain your situation and request a quicker decision timeline following your final round. Firms are often accommodating in such cases, especially if they are genuinely interested in you.
Providing Proof: While it’s not always necessary to provide proof of the offer, some firms may request it to verify your claim. Be prepared to share a redacted version of the offer letter or a screenshot showing the deadline if asked. However, only do so if explicitly requested.
Tone and Framing: When reaching out, ensure your tone is professional and non-confrontational. Emphasize your strong interest in Firm A and frame the request as a way to help you make an informed decision rather than as an ultimatum.
Risks: Be mindful that using an exploding offer as leverage can sometimes backfire if not handled delicately. Some firms may view it as undue pressure, so it’s crucial to strike the right balance in your communication.
Backup Plan: If Firm A cannot accommodate your request, you’ll need to decide whether to accept Firm B’s offer or take the risk of waiting for Firm A’s decision. As one WSO thread aptly puts it, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” so weigh your options carefully.
Good luck with your final round and navigating this situation!
