Putting expected GPA on a freshman resume?
I'm a freshman who will be graduating in 2020, a year early I have been networking quite a bit since the year has begun. I have talked to recruiters from companies such as Broadridge and CA Technologies (they recruit students from my school often) about whether they would prefer an expected GPA or "GPA: N/A" on my resume, they have preferred "expected". I spoke with my career center representatives and they advise that I don't include the expected GPA. From a finance perspective (I am looking more specifically into S&T), what do you think?
Also, I put "sophomore standing", should I just put my expected graduation instead? Because if they don't realize that I'm a freshman it looks like I didn't exist until Fall 2017.
Thank you!
So you are a freshman in your first semester? I'd say that putting expected GPA should be fine until you receive 1st semester grades. Career services at most schools are clueless so don't put too much stock into what they say.
Yep, I don't have a GPA yet.
Dude, your resume couldn't possibly have anything on it. I wouldn't even bother. Just tell people you're in first year at school x and just want to learn more about the industry. No one is going to care about your fake grades and experience at subway.
I've had about four internships and other experience. I'm also on two eboards (possible three by January) already. It's worked for getting me interviews at the two companies I networked with, so idk
lol 4 internships before college? what
As a first semester freshman you're fine to leave off your GPA (which in this case isn't relevant as you don't have one yet :P).
Expected GPA wouldn't be ideal, because you never know how a humanities paper or a calc exam could skew things :)
It's just confusing because I'm a "freshman" but I have enough credits to be a sophomore
If you had any completed credits you would have a GPA.
Whats this enough credits to be a sophomore stuff, bro?
I have AP Exam transfer credits, it got bundled with my HS GPA. For example, I took Calc 1 and Calc 2 equivalents in HS, so I started my freshman year with Calc 3
put your AP us history score on there in case the recruiter asks for your opinion on the gadsden purchase
Given the rampant cheating/plagiarism/workforpay going on in universities (especially the top-tier ones), GPA is relatively meaningless. This is my personal opinion, of course.
LOL says no one in the industry
Well, my school had an honor code which was enforced by the honor court. I was elected to the honor court. People were regularly prosecuted for cheating and it wasn't a pretty matter. They lost scholarships, were blacklisted officially, had to tell the next school they applied to that they were kicked out for an ethical violation.
Yeah, they were screwed. Pretty much screwed.
What exactly is expected GPA anyway. Like I feel I am smart so I should get a 4.0??? Put your SAT scores if you feel to need to have something there, but please don't make up something
Mmmmmm okay. I'll just put GPA: N/A I can still put my HS GPA, which was a 3.93 or something, so I guess that's okay.
Yeah, I think that works. Could also put your SAT / ACT score or whatever it's called now.
If your GPA is below 3.7, do not put on resume.
Its 3.5.
In Engineering it is like 3.0.
The correct format is:
"PF GPA: 3.8" and then footnote it -- "(1) Expected 2020E cumulative GPA"
They'll understand, and it shows you really understanding banking.
Incredible advice +SB
EDIT: No credits, my bad
You're such a tease.
This is silly, I was in a similar position w.r.t. AP credits, you're still a freshman so don't represent yourself as "sophomore standing." it just seems forced and confusing. Don't put your GPA (since you have no college grades) at all. If anyone asks, you can explain verbally, but nobody will since you're a freshman... besides you will have your HS GPA and presumably SAT/ACT score. People will be able to tell you're smart.
EDIT: I would also advise against graduating early. Take on a double-major or a minor, or take fewer classes per semester, and graduate on time. Study abroad, have good internships, enjoy college life, enter the workforce well-rounded. Don't rush out and be the youngest person on your team with the fewest life experiences.
I posted in a comment below about why I want to convey that I can graduate early. I would totally embrace my school career, but I also seriously dislike where I am, and so does my other finance-focused friend. (We go to a STEM school.) I'm revving up my resume for a transfer for Fall 2018, so I'll see what happens.
I don’t think transferring is a good idea.
If possible just finishing engineering degree in 3 years then do a 1 year msf or even mba.
Good job on the internships and eboard positions. With that being said, I think three unpaid club positions would be an inefficient use of your valuable time. Are the eboard positions that you have/are considering remotely related to Finance and what you want to do or something like VP of Marketing that just sends out weekly emails? If the latter, I'd only worry about one, the most relevant.
Grind on school, applications, making money, and having fun. It's college, not Keeping up with the Joneses. As mentioned by others, don't put "sophomore standing," you'll just come off as pretentious. Only a few weeks until you have an actual GPA. Good luck!
Thanks! One eboard position I picked up as a safety net in about the first two weeks of school, the other two are for the Economics Club and the Investment Club.
The whole sophomore thing is confusing because I've spoken with recruiters who see that I'm a freshman and tell me to wait, but once I say that I'm ending this year with 60+ credits they encourage me to apply. I don't know how to convey that in less than three words on a resume.
Literally 3 words:
"Class of 2020"
No one really cares about giving you an internship after sophomore year anyway. Internships are for trying out potential full time hires. You are basically looking for a family friend that lets you hang out in the office for a summer .
In your position look for a cool community service summer project. Maybe even something engineering related. It still adds something to your resume. There’s plenty of programs for things like that.
Put expected GPA as 3.94. Trust me
