Putting Karate Credentials on my Resume??
I was thinking my resume was looking a little empty and was thinking of adding my Karate credentials (black belt) onto either my interests section or under certifications near my MBA certificate.
Would this be helpful for job applications as either a talking point or showing I have discipline?
Lol I’ve seen resumes with Karate on it before, usually in the interest section though
Wouldn’t put it into certifications
Lmaoo no don’t do that; why would you put your Karate belt ranking on your resume as a certification?
Bro who is going to protect the data room
Eh I’d interview you - a lot of people did Karate growing up, myself included. Only seen a few resumes with that interest
Between the mba program certificate and the karate black belt, which one was the more expensive online purchase?
I would put it. I didn’t put my experience on there, but if I saw it I would put the resume aside. I know the amount of hard work and dedication it takes to excel at martial arts (especially mentally) and it shows you have discipline. Also, you might be surprised how many people have martial arts experience.
Definitely include it in your interests, not your credentials section
Just be prepared to duel your VP to the death when time comes time to decide if you get the promotion and take his spot
Have the most hilarious story from a mentor re: exactly this - can't disclose, but just off of how well putting it in his resume went for him, I say do it
Honestly I would just assume you meant sigma black belt or something...not literally karate.
I would only put job-relevant things in certifications. However, this would be great to put under interests--keep it to one line, at the end of the resume, and as part of a list of other hobbies/interests. Specifying black belt as you did in the post is great too.
The last line of my resume is always "Interests: [list of hobbies / things I like talking about]". I update it to things I am truly interested in at the time and can talk about. Just make sure it is stuff that could actually be interesting to the general public--it's not gonna help if it's something so niche and doesn't even sound cool that no one cares about it.
The interviewer in the vast majority of interviews has asked me about something on that list. A good amount also explicitly state they like seeing it so they can see you're not someone can only talk about work. Worst case scenario, people just ignore it. Best case scenario, there is a common interest that completely derails the interview and we have a great time just talking about something we both enjoy instead of standard interview questions. It won't get you the job or even the interview, but it can be a tie-breaker and just make interviews more enjoyable.
