Today is not a good day over in my neck of the woods. Long story short, but I was expecting to have a conversation saying that come March of next year I will officially be moved up in the company.
To give a brief, brief background...I was brought into a boutique ER shop as a sales assistant (this company likes to promote from within, so a move to ER or onto the sales desk is in my future). I have now been here over a year, and was expecting my bump up (as they've done with every other sales assistant in the past), however, that did not happen. Now there are a few possible reasons for this, but the one that is glaring at me is the fact that I would be the youngest person on the desk by at least 2 years.
To say the least, I am EXTREMELY annoyed and frustrated as I didn't go to school and major in Finance at a top 20 undergrad business program (non-target), to become an admin for 2 years. My question to you monkey's is what the hell should I do? I want to do sales, so my move would be to another desk. Is that even possible with literally 0 book developed?
I obviously do NOT want to lateral, I want to move up and be placed on a team. Should I wait it out for my promotion here (could take another 12 months) or should I try to jump ship?
Any advice would help as I am extremely, extremely annoyed right now. Thanks in advance!
wait another year and in the mean time try to make the jump for that 2nd tier that you wanted
Do you know the reason as to why you were not promoted? I am sure they will give you something more than your age. That might be first step I take and then explain to them why you think you should be promoted.
What options do you have? You can put a lot of effort into jumping into what you want. But if that doesn't work out your best bet is still to wait it out at your company. Look for work, continue to do a good job at your current place, and don't overreact by taking a job you don't really want somewhere else.
Suck it up. Be thankful you didn't get canned. You still have a seat at the table, the kid's table, but you're in the room. Keep chugging along. Don't complain about this, makes you seem like a spoiled brat who didn't get what he wanted. You obviously didn't get it for a reason. Find out what it is, and make some changes.
Not everyone just begs for the opportunity to work for someone else. Obviously OP didn't give enough information, but being upset doesn't make you a brat. And there aren't always good reasons behind everything. Perhaps you've had the luck or luxury of having nice teams or bosses. But not everyone gets so lucky. Sometimes bosses or firms are just rude or don't give a shit. I've had teams at reputable firms that kept me for a year around other analysts after I graduated. Only they hired me as a contract worker so they wouldn't have to give me healthcare, benefits, or a salary. They knew the market was shit in my city and I needed experience so they were able to pay me shit. Okay fine, welcome to capitalism. I get it. but it doesn't mean everyone who is upset is just a brat and there are good reasons for everything.
Thank you everyone for the responses. I was extremely heated yesterday and definitely overreacted. This is a positive, albeit not the positive I was hoping for. The sales desk is currently at capacity, which is why (I believe) I did not receive the promotion I was hoping to get. My current position is just not what I envisioned doing my first 2 years in the industry and it has become increasingly frustrating to come in here day in and day out and keep chugging along on administrative stuff.
Again, liked what everyone had to say and I appreciate the quick feedback.
