Received Rejection After MD's Positive Reply: Follow Up or Not?

Does this mean I'm out? So, for some context, I reached out to an MM firm with a non-NYC office and eventually got to one of their MDs. He responded super quickly, within an hour, saying thanks for reaching out and that he'd forward my resume to the associate leading recruiting. Told me to expect to hear from them, didnt give a timeline but know from networking they havent done any hiring yet and are staring in jan. This was before Thanksgiving, so I figured maybe it's just end-of-year stuff, and they probably won't start anything until after the December bonuses. But then, I got a rejection email from that same office this week. I'm kinda confused about it, especially since nyc hasn't rejected me yet because i applied to both, but for context i did apply to the general analyst app for this office and not the 2024 first analyst app, they didnt have one

Should I reach out again? I was thinking of waiting until January, but not sure now

Kind of puzzled here. The MD’s up there in the ranks, but it’s a small office, so maybe he’s not in the know. They might be clearing out laterals first, focusing on that and up. A brutal market.
