Recruiting Timeline for Sophomore Summer Internships (2021)?

Currently I'm a rising sophomore (non-diversity) at a large non-target state school on the east coast. While I do not have anything lined up for this summer (other than small BB mentorship program), I was wondering when I should start getting in touch with smaller boutique banks in my region for possible internships next summer. I'm part of my school's investment club that manages a large equity portfolio and places its members onto Wall Street pretty well for a non-target, and this summer I've mainly been focusing on reading books, a few online courses, and sharpening technical skills. I have a 3.7 and have previous accounting-related experience. I have consistently been reaching out to school alumni working in IB or S&T over the past couple of months and trying to build relationships, but have yet to get in touch with anyone in terms of possible internships for next summer. Also I was wondering how beneficial it would be to do a BB PWM internship for my sophomore summer and how it would compare to an internship with a boutique IB. I Appreciate any suggestions and advice, thanks

I’d recommend trying to get the Boutique IB internship during the academic year. Boutiques typically don’t have structured internship programs, so you’re helping out around the office and might get some experience with modeling and building slide decks. It’s better to get this experience during the school year if you can schedule your classes after 1pm (work 9am-12pm during the week).

Then you can get the BB PWM internship for your sophomore summer. If it’s a structured internship, you will get decent exposure and become comfortable in a professional environment. This will set you up well to recruit for SA internships the following summer.
