Recs on presenting

Hey guys,

after a hard year grinding, networking and dealing with rejection emails/HR ghosting me I feel like I might actually have a good chance at this MM boutique bank which makes me excited. For some context I'm applying for an internship with high chances of converting to analyst after a couple months(ik this might not be standard practice but it might be due to regional differences).

I've successfully gone through 3 phases so far but I was asked to work on a case study of a local public company and present it to the team. Although nervous I feel ready to take this chance and knock it outta the park, but I was wondering if you guys have any general recommendations as to do's, dont's and other tips. If you were an associate what would you expect from an excelent candidate? what would do the extra mile for you?

Thanks a lot

Are you asking about presentation skills or what to present? If the former, then here's some advice:

Practice, practice, practice. There should be no notecards or reading sentences off the slides. I like referring to a point on the slide but then expanding on such point verbally. You should be able to cover off on the main points on each slide (1-2 minutes of you talking in general, but not sure how much time your allotted / how many slides you're making) without going into too much detail, and saving the detail for Q&A. For financial charts, I like talking about the high and the low points of a graph (e.g., ramp up in earnings, ramp down in earnings, etc.). Never cross your arms or put your hands in your pockets. You should be giving consistent eye contact, having good posture, overall cheery / optimistic mood, and using hand gestures to emphasize points, and using a few different tonalities (reference this video from Jordan Belfort - he does an excellent job about the nonverbals:

). I'm not sure how much time your allotted, but save 25% of the time for Q&A. Introduce the company as nobody knows what it is or what they do - a few sentence overview is always helpful for someone who came in blind to review the case study.

For what to present, here's some advice:

Just spitballing here, but assume you'd want a few slides that hit on business overview (what they do, locations, end markets served, top customers, growth opps, historical and projected financials, industry dynamics / competitors, risks of the business, etc.), and then a few slides that cover each of the points mentioned on the business overview page. Since you're presenting, try to cut down on word count and not have long sentences
