Resigning - before or after background check?

Any thoughts on when to resign from your current position if you have a new job lined up, but your new employer is still wrapping up background checks? Would like to start new role as soon as possible, but unfortunately I have to provide a 4 week notice to my current employer. I have nothing sketchy to hide so I'm not worried about the background check, but wondering if I should play it 100% safe and just wait until it's done?

Appreciate the thoughts so far. Unfortunately I'm not really sure how long the background check will take - I'm at the VP level with 10 years of work experience (though only at 2 firms) so could take a while. The last time I resigned was a while back as an analyst so only had to provide 2 weeks notice period and I waited until the background check was finished. Just wanted to get perspectives from other people whether to do the same this time around even though my notice period is 4 weeks.
