Resigning properly

Hi all,

I have been in a terrible work environment and my work product has suffered greatly to the point to where I have been put on a formal PIP after being a strong performer for the first 1.5 years of my job. I understand this is a Deathwish for advancement in the firm so I have managed to secure another offer at a direct competitor firm (say I am going from CS to UBS when CS was still solvent).

I am waiting for the background to clear but what would be the most appropriate way to resign. My seniors may know the new team I am joining so I want to keep it as vague as possible (i.e I would not update my linkedin for a bit etc.). I want to leave on good terms and so I was going to be as vague as possible when I resign saying that I have taken a new opportunity in a new "(current field)" team. I am assuming this will lead them to move me out immediately. What is the best way to do so.

I think your idea is the way to go. At the end of the day you don't really owe them anything. Giving notice is polite in itself and you're smart to keep your cards close to your chest considering they put you on the PIP. Make sure everything is confirmed with the new role and then tell your boss face to face that you are leaving for a new opportunity.

I’d say simply that you’ve obviously been struggling and are resigning to find something where you feel like you will be a better fit.

Don’t tell them about the other offer or where you are going. Wait 6 months to update your LinkedIn (and back date it). At that point your new team will know you. The new firm won’t care if your LinkedIn is out of date.

lol dude people don't really care as much as you think - it would be fine to update the LinkedIn immediately.

Just have a face to face with your manager and say you're taking an offer elsewhere, thank them for the opportunity, and you'd be willing to give the "two weeks" as a courtesy, and if they have any questions you can answer. That's it. If it's a competitor, you'll be locked out that day.

This happens a lot but it's challenging convo to have. You don't owe an explanation. Don't try to tell them off, either.  No one is going to talk smack about you to a new employer, at the end of the day, we are tiny in comparison to others.

Best of luck
