Responding to headhunters if offcycle

Hey all. I’m an incoming FT analyst at top MM (HL/JEF) and have been getting emails from headhunters about setting up initial chats for PE opportunities. I’m not ready for on-cycle, but would rather push for off-cycle. Do I need to respond at all and have these initial chats or can I just ghost til next cycle next year for 2nd years?

Can you please share some headhunters still having open roles and looking out for candidates? Looking to get into private side from credit risk.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's advisable to respond to headhunters even if you're not ready for on-cycle recruiting. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Initial Chats: Engaging in initial chats with headhunters can be beneficial. It helps you build relationships and stay on their radar for future opportunities. You can express your interest in off-cycle opportunities or mention that you plan to participate in the next year's on-cycle process.

  2. Laying Low: If you're not ready for on-cycle recruiting, you can lay low until the current cycle dies down. This approach allows you to prepare better and reach out to headhunters when they have more time for you.

  3. Off-Cycle Opportunities: Mentioning your interest in off-cycle opportunities can be advantageous. Some large funds do hire off-cycle, and being proactive about your preferences can help you secure these positions.

  4. Building a Solid Foundation: Use your first year to build a strong foundation of work experience. This will make you a more competitive candidate when you decide to recruit, whether on-cycle or off-cycle.

In summary, it's better to respond to headhunters and communicate your preferences rather than ghosting them. This keeps your options open and helps you build valuable connections for future recruitment cycles.
