Resume in .doc or .pdf?

I recently sent in an e-mail application for an internship at a local boutique; however I just realized that I accidentally sent the .docx version of my resume rather than the .pdf.

Am I correct in thinking PDF's are generally preferred over doc files? If yes, should I send a second e-mail with the PDF file in it, or would that hurt more than it helps?

I would email HR, tell them that you accidentally send the doc version, and that if there were any formatting errors to use the attached PDF version. The reason that PDF is used is because different companies have different MW versions which leads to a lot of resumes losing all of their formatting in the .doc version when they open it...you could have dates in wrong places, huge gaps between lines, almost a completely unreadable resume.
