Return offer apprehension

I’ve spent the past several months browsing WSO. Some threads have been extremely informative and others have made my midsection ache from laughter. This is a great forum and I wish I knew about it a long time ago.

This will be my first post. I was fortunate enough to land a (now virtual) summer internship at an investment manager. The office where I’ll be interning is smaller, only about 20-25 people. There are only about 5-6 junior people (analyst or associate level) that I assume I will be working with mostly. Everyone I have met so far during interviews and coffees was very nice and seemed to like me. This will seem like the professional version of kiss and tell, but I can easily see myself working there full-time after I graduate next year based on what I have seen of their culture, the location, and nature of the work.

The reason for the post is the following. I really want to give myself a good shot at getting a return offer. Here are a few questions that may guide your comments if you care to drop one below.

1. What are return offer statistics for situations like mine? (Not necessarily looking for exact numbers, that would be impossible)

  1. What can I do to make myself stand out and be liked by my coworkers with all my interactions being virtual? Should I just set up calls with everyone and make sure everyone knows who I am?

  2. How do I balance appearing competent and intelligent but also humble and self-aware as my place as the intern who’s just there to take busy work off my coworkers’ plates?

I know this post may be extremely cringe but this is my first big boy full-time finance internship and I don’t want to mess this up. Please help.

I messed up the numbering and can’t figure out how to edit but still should be clear that I have three cardinal topics/questions.

I think it would be a great idea to set up short calls with most people if not everyone to just introduce yourself to them if you haven't already or have a quick catch-up and express your excitement for the opportunity as well as some things you hope to learn over the summer. During these calls you can also set the stage that you hope to be that persons go to guy for anything under the sun. Not sure on the return stats though.

I think you’re def right, I just need to mad up and do that honestly

Awesome, then best of luck. Hard to provide advice other than the generic stuff (be a value add, be enthusiastic, etc.) One complaint I do hear often from PM's (mostly regarding interview candidates/interns/associates) is they don't think enough like an investor. Learn the difference between a good company and a good investment and you will be well ahead of your peers.

congrats on the internship. i dont think you need to necessarily call each person from the team. certainly do it for the md or hiring manager on your first day.

for me i rely on my analysts and associates to give me their view on interns since they work with them the most. it always goes a long way to shoot them emails and ask if theres anything you can help with.

goodluck

Thank you. So once my internship starts, do you think it would be annoying to ask maybe once a week if they need help with anything (in addition to what ever else I get assigned)?
