Should I Apply for Vanderbilt MSF?

I’m currently a student at a non-target, decided to pursue IB ~one year ago. I have a solid GPA (3.75) and 5 total internships (mostly accounting). I graduate this December in 4.5 years because I took a semester off for one of those internships.

I have been through 4 full-time processes, 3 of which I got super days and felt good about my chances, but unfortunately no offer. I only have one interview left and if I strike out, should I pursue Vanderbilt’s MSF program?

The market is really bad for starter jobs like Big 4 advisory so my options feel limited. The Vanderbilt program seems very impressive, however by the time I graduate it’d be 6 total years of school. Any thoughts / advice would be great.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice regarding your situation:

  1. Vanderbilt MSF Program:

    • Reputation and Placement: Vanderbilt has a strong reputation and good placement in investment banking (IB). It places well into various finance roles, including IB, which could be beneficial given your career goals.
    • Alumni Network: Vanderbilt has a robust alumni network, which can be advantageous for networking and job placements.
  2. Considerations:

    • GPA and Internships: Your solid GPA (3.75) and extensive internship experience (5 internships) are strong points in your favor. These will make you a competitive candidate for the Vanderbilt MSF program.
    • Market Conditions: Given the current tough job market for entry-level positions, pursuing an MSF could enhance your credentials and improve your chances of landing a desirable role in IB or finance.
    • Duration of Education: While completing the MSF would mean a total of 6 years of education, the potential benefits in terms of career opportunities and networking might outweigh this concern.
  3. Alternative Options:

    • Networking: Continue to network aggressively. Sometimes, networking can open doors that formal applications cannot.
    • Other Programs: Consider other reputable MSF programs as well, such as MIT, Columbia, or Villanova, which also have strong placements and might offer different advantages.
  4. Final Thoughts:

    • Personal Goals: Ultimately, the decision should align with your long-term career goals and personal circumstances. If you believe the Vanderbilt MSF will significantly boost your career prospects and you are prepared for the additional year of education, it could be a worthwhile investment.

Good luck with your decision!

Familiar with the program, I heard IB recruiting has been rough in 2023 / 2024. Quality of students seem to vary a lot and it shows in outcomes. Many of those who got IB offers had some experience pre-MBA equivalent to Big 4 Advisory. Anecdotally, know of at least 1 MBB offer in their recent cohort. I also believe I know someone from the program who did a pre-MBA summer internship and was able to get an offer locked up before starting the program (I wouldn't be surprised if they had a few other classmates who were in a similar situation). IB placement also varies quite a lot on location, NYC / SF / Chi / Southern cities. If you're location agnostic, it's a great school to try to break in.
