should I transfer from rutgers business school to umich(econ)?

hi, I was just accepted to university of michigan's school of arts and science and I was wondering if I should transfer there? I am currently a rising sophomore at rutgers business school. Do you think it is worth. How is the reputation of UMICH for econ (not Ross),..is it good enough to transfer to from rutgers..or is it not worth it? I am interested in a career in equity research.

I'm no expert on this, so keep that in mind.

I'd be loathe to pay 30K/year extra to go to Umich vs. Rutgers.

Especially if you're a top/really good student at Rutgers.

huh?

The thought process is that if you're a top student at Rutgers--with networking--OP will be able to break in anyway without having to pay 30K/year extra to study econ at UMich. Reasonable minds may disagree.

Ok, I was just having a hard time understanding your post. I think there is a definite rationale to your point. Honestly, I'd go to Mich for the better OCR opportunities as, at least in my experience, you get many more interviews that way. Even with extensive networking there is much less return for your effort in that than outside of OCR. And the name of Mich and network of Mich is worth an extra 60k.

If you are a top student at Rutgers you should have no trouble networking and placing into a SA spot (this assuming you are of course both a top student and a beast at networking). Also, proximity and access to the city definitely helps for internships during the year to boost your resume. Maybe if the difference were lets say 10k/yr I would consider but for 30k/yr no way.

Nice guys may not finish last but they sure don't finish first. Loyalty is not rewarded, it's taken advantage of.

I have a lot of friends who have placed well on the street from Rutgers. You have a shitload of old school alumni who are originally from the NYC/jersey area who are helpful as fuck, especially since a lot of them can't stand these new pansies that have been places in their offices from the targets. Show them you're hungry and they will help. I know a kid out of Rutgers that did his SA with BX so you can make it happen if you work hard enough.

It's not worth it. I made the transition from a similar ranked state school - UMich Econ - UMich Ross. UMich Econ is absolutely not worth it, and certainly not for 30K more. Save the money, excel at Rutgers, and you'll do just fine. Keep in mind that even if you do transfer to Michigan and apply to Ross, you'll be staying an extra semester/year.
