so how does this work?
Hello cruel internet,
I am co 2026 math / finance major at a 'semi-target' (for ib) t20 school with a 3.8+. for some reason, i thought until now if I focused on school, everything else would fall into place. SO NAIVE.... Since I had spent so much time working at my GPA (obviously), I never thought about my future prospects in the adult world. I have always known I dont want to be in IB (unfortunately the stick in my ass does not reach that far up as some of my classmates), but would really enjoy to wear a suit to work, genuinely love math, and find excel extremely satisfying. My interest in finance also comes from watching my stoner dad day trade stocks instead of working throughout my youth.
However I realize it is time to bear down and get serious if I wish to make it out of the mud. I have come to this forum since I know it is the place to get the most realistic grounding advice. I will list out some of my experiences for context:
Summer 2022 & 2023: Waitress in my native foreign country (65+ hours of labor a week). Engaging in cultural exchange with real pirates and alcoholic farmers.
College: paid research in chemistry
paid scholar at the exclusive program (not finance hahahah)
1 finance club at school (I could not have done more). Sorority leadership position (this has shaped me into an ethical and responsible individual)
Could anyone on here provide me real insight into my future in the finance world? Am I still in any recruiting timeline? If I hop on linkedin msgs right now, is it actually too late?
I am not sure if only IB operates under a twisted timeline of hiring 19-year-olds. Is s&t in cycle? Equity research? Anything?
All advice and rude commentary from your glorified vistas of success would be wonderful and well appreciated.
