sophomore non target needing advice.
Hello everyone,
I am a sophomore from a non-target in the West Coast looking for an internship.
I am wondering if I should network, cold call, cold email VC, ER, AM, PE, etc firms or should I go for a accounting internship, which my school is targeted by the Big 4?
This might be a stupid question because everyone will say go for the finance internships I listed above because its better than accounting, but here's my current situation.
-I am currently finishing up my lower division business courses (I am 3 courses behind, which are GEs and I can take one online later in the school year and the rest in the summer and winter). I am currently taking Business Law, Business Stats, and Managerial Acct, plus 2 GEs. Because of the courses Im taking i feel that i might get rejected from the those finance firms because I have not taken any finance courses yet, even though I am currently a finance major, which I plan to go into accounting when Im qualified. Am I right on this one?
-Speaking of accounting, I have taken financial accounting and currently taking managerial. Even as a accounting major I plan to do finance work after college.
-I don't have finance job experience or even accounting. I have participated in the PwC xTreme contest. Had job experience in other fields, held tutoring and college jobs, and am currently participating in NCAA D1 sports and doing work as a campus rep for WSO. I also held leadership positions
- I also plan to join business fraternities or clubs this semester.
Now that I've given the situation, I am going to ask again. Should I network, cold call, cold email VC, ER, AM, PE, etc firms or should I go for a accounting internship then go for the finance internships?
Another question, I notice that VC firms has to do with a lot of technology. Does this mean that in order to get a VC job I have to have some sort of technical background?
You wrote that you wanted to switch into accounting, so wouldn't it be more relevant to what you wanted to do if you did an accounting internship over finance?
Yes i do want to switch to accounting. There are accounting majors who are doing finance work, which is what i want to do.
