Sports and resume
Hey guys,
A lot of recruiters and firms praise team sports as evidence of competitiveness and team work, however I don't do any team sports; I do track running, swimming, skiing and other "solo" sports.
I do love working within a team and did so many times during my last internships, but im scared not having any team sport might weight down my CV.
I know this is a bit stupid to ask but....should I join a "team sport" ?
It is not necessary at all and I would recommend against joining a team just for the sake of your resume. I participated in one of the aforementioned sports while in college and I can tell you everyone I interviewed with was impressed with my ability to manage 20 plus hours a week in a varsity sport and still do well academically. It all boils down to how you spin your experience. An individual sports speaks to your discipline and your dedication. Its a lot harder to do well in individual sports because the motivation has to be 100% internal.
I've interviewed plenty of people. Unless you played D1 and I've seen you on TV (ie not D1 LAX or something stupid like that) then leave it off your resume. Otherwise listing sports on there is just plain dumb.
I played a D1 sport (and only for 2 years before having a career ending injury) but you didn't see me on the tv. That said, i've had interviewers bring it up ALL THE TIME. I was told specifically by people at BB's that they "love athletes" and spent 10 minutes of a 30 minute interview talking about my time as an athlete and my situation that led to me leaving the sport. Even if you are a D3 athlete if you can talk about being a captain, having national success, etc interviewers will want to see that and it will help you.
Division 1 Lacrosse, like other less known D1 sports, is a serious commitment and one that requires just as much time and dedication as the sports that you have seen on TV. Given that recruiters are looking for the qualities garnered from these sports rather than the actual skills I would seriously reflect on your comment.
Gentleman, I respectfully disagree. I think my experience in D1 Cross Country has helped me out a ton not only in getting me interviews but also demonstrating my ability. Sports, team sports especially, showcase several personality traits that are critical to trading, but also finance in general. It also shows interests outside of finance. I agree that football and basketball are probably better, but that's only because there's a higher chance that the interviewer will be a fan which might lead to a more personal connection.
If you want to...but not necessary
Thank you for your input guys, I highly appreciate it. Stupid decision to join a team sport: Canceled.
On a side note, I will still put my "sports" on my resume, but its only on a single line at the bottom of the cv; I believe it can help to give the guy hiring to see if i'm well rounded and not a workaholic robot that will burn out in six months time.
Any sport is a good sport. Yes team sports are better because they show teamwork, communication, etc but even a solo sport shows dedication and discipline. And D1 doesn't matter, D3 is still a commitment.
Like other posters said, sports helps in interviews. I played D1 basketball and I had 2-3 interviews where all we talked about were the times when I played Duke or UNC. Put it on your resume regardless of the sport or level
Look guys, real life isn't the fucking AYSO where everyone gets a trophy because everyone is a special and unique snowflake. Your resume is about your academic and professional achievements. Anything else is extra and should probably be left off.
