Stigma for Canadian Students studying in the US and interning in Canada?
I’m a Canadian student attending an American target school (going into freshman year in the fall) and I’m hoping to work in the US after graduation. Due to Visa issues/connections I’ve formed in the past, I may end up working in Canada next summer. Wanted to hear WSO’s opinion on whether this would hurt me for SA recruiting the year after, as I may not seem dedicated to staying in the US, or if HR/banks are either generally understanding or don’t care that much about where I did my internship in sophomore year, so long as it is relevant.
Also, semi-related – does working at one of the Big 5 in Canada hold a similar amount of weight as working at a BB in Canada, or should I aim for a brand name (in terms of what will help me for junior year SA recruiting)?
Not going to say I'm an expert on this or anything, but I would think that you'd want to try to work in the US, but could likely easily explain it away in interviews, especially seeing as it's sophomore year. What I would say is go for a BB if you can - Big 5 is likely less influential because they're going to be less known down here (although RBC is making some progress, none of them are at the BB level).
Interested in hearing other thoughts on this, if anyone can comment with experience or if they've done this before it'd be appreciated.
