"Struck out" on phone interview, would you call them back?
Freshman, one of my first replies for my cold emailing. The call was unexpected and kind of caught me off guard(called without notice) and was wondering what you would do in this situation.
1. I screwed up by not remembering where I found his firm/program through. I gave a vague answer like google/linkedin and he said he didn't like vague answers(he thought I wouldn't tell him intentionally or that I was applying to multiple jobs and couldn't remember).
2. They had investment philosophies and asked me to name them, I was only able of bringing up a few and they were looking for more.
This is a small boutique fund.Should I chalk this one up as a loss? Or should I follow up? They said to me over the phone that the program is usually for 2nd and 3rd years, however they did have first years who were really ambitious.
You'll never make a sale if you take no for an answer.
You could probably annoy the guy. But where is the downside for you in doing that, unless you're the sort of person who doesn't have the soul of a salesman and takes head damage from being very pushy? The upside is he may change his mind and you could secure an internship.
(I don't like people with the souls of salesmen; if I had a daughter, I'd never let her marry someone like that; similarly, I wouldn't let my imaginary daughter marry an MRA or PUA)

They have their place and many of them will make more money than I will ever see. Finance would be very slow and unlucrative without them. They are essential to making money move.
I like many of them.
But that doesn't mean I'd ever trust one.
They also don't have souls.
The guy who called you sounds like a douche. He randomly called you and expected you to know their "philosophy" on the spot? Sounds fucked.
As dumb as I found them(one-liner quotes that were more pseudo-philisophical than anything), I do hold myself accountable for that because they were listed on their site. He specifically said over the phone, I have my 2 investment associates sitting next to me and they all agree that you didn't properly state our firm's philosophies. Pretty douchey in my eyes, but hey as a freshman if there's a bone thrown at me, I'll bite.
From what it sounds like the culture is absolute garbage, but from what I've seen on linkedin, they whip you their interns into pretty good shape.
