Stuttering and Interviewing

I’m entering my last semester of undergrad and have been networking in NYC all summer. I definitely feel like I’ve been making progress in terms of making connections and have begun the full time recruiting process (first phone screen tomorrow). I have a stutter, not a terrible one but if you talk to me for long enough you’ll probably notice it. In everyday conversation, I break my speech up (in a natural way), and use filler such as “like”, “um”, “uh”, etc. to smooth out my speech so I’m not actually stuttering very often. I’ve learned to do this pretty well, most people don’t know that I stutter until I tell them but I’ve found that my speech patterns are a bit problematic for interviews. I have a hard time saying exactly what I want to say in exactly the way I want to say it, and I often have to break up my speech in the ways I mentioned before which can make me sound overly casual or sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about. I’ve gotten very frustrated with this because I know that if I didn’t stutter and could say exactly what I wanted I feel I would perform much better than I am.

I’ve realized that I basically have to work twice as much at preparing to interview to minimize hiccups, but I’m wondering if anyone else has advice for how to deal with this. Should I tell my interviewer upfront that I stutter? Are there any other people out there with similar issues? Would love to hear any advice you have to give. Thanks
