Superday Call back

My friend recently went to a superday with a BB on the West coast. He got a call back the afternoon after the interviews saying that he did really well and was a great fit for the office. However the caller said that he was in no position to make an offer at this moment since the number of analyst to be hired has yet to be confirmed, but will be in touch in the coming days. Does anyone have any idea what does this mean? Is this a good sign or has my friend been placed on the waitlist?

that means they already call people they wanted and if the spot opned up, he might have a chance.

Sounds to me like eric1025 is right on. I would say that this is a nice way for them to tell you that you are a strong candidate, but given this pool of applicants, you aren't quite strong enough to make the top crop. Not the worst thing in the world, as I'm sure that for every few of those people that received definitive offers, there is probably at least one or two people that received definitive dings. It is definitely a quick turnaround time, but I still think that your friend has been put on the back burner to simmer while they wait to see who accepts and who rejects the offers, and whether there is any room for a few more analysts - the group may very well be considering marginally expanding the incoming class and waiting to find out whether that will be approved or not. Tell your friend to hang in there, but to not stop looking just yet.
