Superday Waitlist Question

Currently on a waitlist following a superday I had last week, however, I just accepted an offer for an internship this upcoming summer. Is it worthwhile to inform the people at the bank to up my chances or will it probably not do anything?

Informing the bank that you've already accepted another offer might not necessarily improve your chances of moving off the waitlist for the superday. In the high-stakes world of investment banking recruitment, as seen in various discussions on Wall Street Oasis, decisions about waitlisted candidates are often based on a multitude of factors including the bank's hiring needs, the performance of other candidates, and sometimes, the withdrawal of offers from other candidates who were initially preferred.

Here's a strategic approach based on insights from WSO:

  1. Professional Courtesy: It's considered professional to inform the bank about your situation. This doesn't mean it will improve your chances, but it's a matter of transparency. If you decide to inform them, ensure your communication is professional and expresses gratitude for their consideration.

  2. Leverage for Negotiation: If you're highly interested in the position you're waitlisted for, mentioning your offer could potentially be used as a leverage point. This is a delicate maneuver and should be approached with caution. You could express that while you have an offer, their opportunity remains your top choice, and you're keen on exploring any possible options to join their team.

  3. Consider Your Commitment: Before taking any steps, consider the commitment you've made to the internship offer you've accepted. Reneging on an offer can have long-term consequences on your professional reputation. Ensure that if you're trying to leverage an offer or considering switching, you're fully aware of the implications.

  4. Networking and Continuous Engagement: Whether you inform the bank or not, continue to engage with your contacts at the bank and express your continued interest in the opportunity. Networking can sometimes open doors, even if the initial answer was not favorable.

In summary, while informing the bank about your offer might not directly improve your chances of getting off the waitlist, it could be beneficial for maintaining professional relationships and potentially negotiating if the situation allows. Always weigh the potential benefits against the professional ethics and commitments you've made.
