Tell me about yourself vs walk me through you resume

These questions essentially have the same answers (emphasizing how interest in finance developed, why u chose your university, majors, relevant experiences, etc). If you are asked both the questions in an interview, how are you supposed to approach the questions? Should you go in more detail with your experiences if you have been asked tell me about yourself?

The way I think about this, most often interviewers will ask you either of these questions at the beginning of the interview. The point of both these questions is 1) just for the interviewer to get a refresher on you (perhaps their mind is somewhere else bc they were busy in meetings or whatever), and more importantly 2) a warm-up for you to get comfortable in the interview setting and releasing some of those initial nerves. Both these questions are pretty much identical, and the interviewer will typically ask follow up questions based on your answer to this (eg, you mention an internship you did, and the interviewer will ask more questions about that experience). So really it's an opportunity for you to take the interview in the direction that you feel highlights your best qualities and experiences.

How I approach the “tell me about yourself” question is, I keep the parts on my resume very vague and broad. I try to talk more about myself and outside interest, how it led to finance and just hobbies and other things I enjoy. It’s worked for me on my interviews and it leads to conversations about things I actually enjoy talking about, not some boring internship. I wait for the interviewer to ask me resume specific questions. Or if they specifically ask to walk through my resume.

I personally hate when I’m interviewing a candidate and I ask “tell me about yourself” and they go on a 10 min monologue about every detail on their resume. I can read that myself, I want to know about YOU.

so what if the question is walk me through ur resume but i give a really personal answer like your "tell me about yourself"?
