Thoughts on applying to one firm in two different office locations
This summer I was supposed to work in a European office of a REIB (Eastdil / CBRE / JLL), but with corona am now working back in the states. I am in my third year of college at a target school and was looking to go into RE full time. I’ve always wanted to work in Europe and wanted to know if, when applying to firms for FT, it was bad practice to apply to two different office locations within the same firm that I interned at, say London and Chicago. Would applying to both hurt my chances of getting either? They’re not giving out automatic FT offers despite corona so I’m just trying to plan ahead for the fall. thanks!
Hey I'm a junior as well, so don't quote me on being the pro here but IMO I don't think it would hurt you to applying to different locations with the same firm. From the hirers pov, it may show that you're versatile and able to adapt to different areas and that you're really interested in the company. I've talked to a broker at JLL that works in DC and he encouraged me to shoot my shot at both DC and NYC for example, so I bet they'd be understanding if you explain your reasoning to apply for multiple locations.
Question, how were you able to pull off the opportunity of working in a European office as an American? Isn't it normally harder to get into those roles unless you're a dual citizen? Just curious because I always wanted to work abroad especially with CRE but didn't know if it's significantly harder if you're not already affilated with the firm.
thanks for your response! it’s good to hear that it’s generally encouraged and not frowned upon.
To answer your question I am a dual citizen with another EU country so it was a bit easier for me to get that internship abroad. I’m unsure what it will look like in a year however due to the UK leaving the EU and I’m not sure if I qualify for settlement...so long story short - honestly try to play the system to get an EU citizenship! I got mine because of an obscure colonization law, and I know some EU countries let you get one if your grandparents are from there. definitely worth the look into!
I doubt it would hurt your chances, especially at large firms where it is likely a different HR person is screening for each market. Plus, people are known to job hunt in multiple cities so even if same person, all it would show is that you have a real interest in the firm, I don't see how that is bad.
If you are junior, as your 1st year profile suggests, then I think there is very, very low risk of applying for multiple positions at one firm so long as they all make sense. If you are more senior you should be more targeted, but differently locations is still fine. If you are say applying for a Director of Asset Mngt role and a VP of Property Mngt, I would think an HR person may think you just applying for anything. If it makes sense you would want and could do each job, no harm in applying for them. Good luck!
