Transitioning from Product Management to Portfolio Management in AM

Hi Monkeys,

I am currently working as a Product Analyst in a Tier 1 AM shop in London (think Wellington/PIMCO/Capital Group). I want to understand how easy or hard is it to transition from Product Analyst roles to Portfolio Management. Does having a masters in finance and CFA help, or do I need an MBA

CFA + MSc definitely helps but i think the problem you will face is having non-technical exp. Almost all the PMs I have seen worked their way up from analyst or trader (depending on the type of PM you want to be)

I think you'll be able to make the leap from product mgmt to analyst with a CFA and MSc but it might be years before you become a fund manager

I think the jump is going to be pretty tough since I work at a very similar shop and largely everyone comes from either a trading or research background, much more the latter. Working in product at a Tier 1 AM is a nice job, but at least where I work won't get you to a PM role.

Having a CFA and MS will help out if you want to change divisions internally though
