unsure how interview went
hi, I just had an interview for an internship and am really unsure about how it went. Started with behaviorals and I answered fine, could have prob been better but definitely solid.
Then we moved into technicals, got the first one pretty much 100% right, but on the second one I had no clue if i was right and was pretty much guessing. I tried to explain my logic at all steps and she asked me a lot of follow ups which I answered to the best of my ability, but my response was overall okay - not bad but definitely not good. On the last technical, I didn't fully understand the question but she corrected me when she thought I misunderstood it, and I was able to give a correct answer but said that I was unsure about it. She instantly questioned me and asked why that wouldn't be the answer, and then I said that it made sense with some logic and she was like yeah that's the right answer.
At the end, I asked questions and she answered for quite a while. At the very end, I asked if there's any other information she needed from me, and she said that she had everything she needed. She then brought up next steps and was like not 100% sure but my guess is that a campus recruiter will reach out to you in a few days, but again not 100% sure. Idk if it's a good thing because she brought up next steps, but also a bad thing because she kept saying how she was unsure.
I thought it went relatively well until the end, does anyone else have any input?
Interview processes depend entirely on the firm and group. Do you know the position of the person who interviewed you? If she was relatively junior like an analyst or young associate, there's a good chance the specific next steps are not in her scope.
What I've seen happen frequently is first rounds like yours are conducted, the interviewers (again, usually juniors) gather and discuss together who they want to advance into the next stages, and then they pass the shortlist along to the HR person or head recruiter for the group (sometimes a senior associate or VP) to make the next round's introductions. Again, totally dependent on how the group does things, but her role in the process might be done after she passes on the feedback.
Don't worry too much about the logistics. Send a thank you email. If they want you, they'll let you know. If they don't reflect, on what went poorly and how you can improve your responses, as it sounds like you stumbled on a few technicals.
An Interview performance is always an unknown for the candidate. There are so many other factors determining the recruitment process that even if you smashed it you will find out only if they call you for another round or to make an offer. My advice is to not overthink what has been done. Focus on delivering the best out of you and do not spend too much time trying to figure out what has gone wrong or not.
