Urgent Question About Background Checks

I accepted a sa position recently but I am worried about the background check. I did an unpaid internship training program that has like 200 people. There was very little face to face interaction and I never submitted the final deliverable for the internship because of interviews. If they background check this would I be ok? Technically I did work there and have the proof I was in the program.

Based on the WSO content, it's common for firms to conduct background checks on previous employment, including internships, as part of their due diligence before finalizing a job offer. However, the depth of these checks can vary widely between companies. Here are a few points to consider regarding your situation:

  1. Proof of Participation: If you have documentation or any form of proof that you were part of the unpaid internship program, this is beneficial. Background checks often verify the existence of your role and the time frame you were involved. Having emails, certificates, or any communication from the program can support your claim.

  2. Level of Verification: For large programs with many participants and minimal interaction, companies might not delve deeply into the specifics of your contributions or the completion of every task. They are more likely to confirm your participation and the dates of your involvement.

  3. Honesty is Key: If there are any discrepancies or concerns, being honest about your experience and the reasons for not submitting the final deliverable can be your best approach. Employers appreciate transparency, and explaining your situation, especially the overlap with interview schedules, shows a level of responsibility.

  4. Preparation: Prepare a brief explanation of your role in the program and the skills or experiences you gained. This can be useful if asked for more details during the background check process or by your new employer.

  5. Contact the Program: If possible, reach out to the coordinators of your unpaid internship program to inform them of the potential background check. Ensuring they have a heads-up can help facilitate a smoother verification process.

Remember, the primary goal of a background check is to verify the accuracy of your resume and ensure there are no significant red flags. As long as you've been truthful about your experiences and can provide some evidence of your involvement, you should be in a good position.
