Vanderbilt Econs vs UMich Econs vs NYU Econs

Hi guys, I've recently received offers to Vanderbilt Econs and UMich Econs (and am awaiting an offer from NYU Econs).

1. In terms of general job prospects, how do these universities fair against each other?

2. I would prefer to work back in Asia when I am done with my undergraduate degree, so in terms of brand recognition in Asia, how are do they stack up?

3. Should I stack Econs with Math? Or is it more important to bump my single major GPA up?

Thanks guys!

In regards to your second question, having a higher GPA is better. Only double in Math if you are really smart and can get As anyway, or if you are planning on doing a PhD in Econ. Otherwise a 3.7 in Econ will get you a a lot farther (at least in banking and consulting) than a 3.4 double Econ/Math. Although I would recommend taking the normal full sequence of calculus, not any abbreviated versions, and linear algebra. Frankly, those math classes will just make your life easier as an econ major. Without them you'll find taking any advanced micro or game theory much more difficult.

The last act is tragic, however happy all the rest of the play is; at the last a little earth is thrown upon our head, and that is the end for ever.

what about 3.8 Econs vs 3.6 Econs+Math? I mean a 3.4 sounds really bad regardless, but surely a 3.6 econs+math is worth more than a 3.8 econs. What do you make of this interpretation.

Neither of these 3 schools are considered "target US" schools for Investment Banking so I doubt they have any Asia-Pacific recruiting. I'm not convinced that going to either of these 3 schools over say Peking or HKUST will leave you better of. If you have money to burn though, I would recommend Vanderbilt>Michigan>NYU in that order for the traditional American college experience.

There is so much misinformation here. For one, both Michigan and NYU are target schools. Michigan has OCR from literally every BB firm and a number of strong boutiques. They place kids into top groups at MS and GS year after year, and last year they put a kid at BX RX FT and one SA this year.

NYU is a target for everyone as well, or more specifically, Stern is. NYU is one of CS' four core schools, along with Harvard, Princeton, and Penn. They place kids at every single bank yearly as well.

Vanderbilt doesn't enjoy great recruiting, unfortunately. One of my pledge brothers had a twin there who had all the right pieces on his resume and just couldn't swing anything. He spoke of how regional the recruiting was and how limited opportunities were. On top of that, if you think Vandy offers a more traditional American college experience than UMich, you're absurdly mistaken. Vandy is an excellent school, but Michigan blows it away in terms of student body size, athletics, Greeklife ... etc.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

@APAE, I received admittance to Vanderbilt CAS and UMich LSA and I am awaiting an offer from NYU CAS. All are for Economics though. Should I be worried about job placement with a degree from those colleges?

Also, I'm actually a bit partial to Vanderbilt right now due to its rising selectivity and prestige, but having you tell me how abysmal recruiting is at Vanderbilt is really killing it for me :(

For Asia:

I don't know that any US school has specific Asia OCR. I know that NYU is sending quite a few kids to BBs in APAC this summer. UMich has sent a couple AFAIK the past few years. Don't know about any from Vandy.

I'd say NYU > Mich > Vandy for APAC. There's a perception that public schools aren't as good (excl. Berkeley, Illinois, maybe UVA) and not as many people are familiar with Vanderbilt. More have heard of Stern, although there's much more of an obsession with Ivies + Chicago/NU + MIT/Stanford. Basically Asia recruiting is down to the brand.

@whynot123 i sort of do agree with your ranking, albeit unfortunately as I have really grown to love what Vanderbilt has to offer. Hmm, any chance that Vanderbilt will be able to increase its recruitment presence over the next 3-5 years?

Every person I know from my top northeastern HS had NYU and Umich as safety schools for people interested in Vanderbilt. Take it for what it's worth. This is also before Vanderbilts meteoric rise in reputation, prestige, selectivity etc that does not appear to be slowing down for many years.

How is it a meteoric rise? They were always considered a solid top 25 school, and Harvard's joked as the "Vanderbilt/Duke/Rice/Emory/SMU" of the North

If it's not NYU Stern, it's not as favorable in Asia. If you like Vanderbilt, then just go to Vanderbilt. Their Asia recruiting isn't great because that's not their core demographic (8% Asian v. 20% NYU (38% Stern), 14% Umich (18% Ross)). You'll work harder during recruiting but if that's the school you want to go to, don't let job prospects dissuade you because Vandy is still a top school and you can definitely get a job out of there.

Before any rips my head off for these #s, there's a margin of unreported and all #s taken from school websites or Businessweek for Stern/Ross.

If it's on the "regular career site," doesn't it mean that's it's just a regular resume drop, as opposed to OCR? I think you misunderstand what OCR is based on what you said in the Michigan summer analyst post. OCR is when they come to campus for 1st rounds (as opposed to you saying "BX does OCR and they come to campus" which is redundant).

I really don't think that NYU/Mich/Vandy have OCR for Asia specific. Everyone I've ever spoken to has had phone interviews for round 1 (incl. HYPSW), then perhaps a second round of phone interviews and then regional superdays in NY/Chi as opposed to senior bankers actually going to 50 different campuses.
