What else can I do to stand out?

I am currently applying for internships for next summer. I am interning within the financial services realm, but am not doing what I want in the long run. The first couple semesters of college I didn't take it seriously and now I'm working my butt off trying to improve my gpa to be able to compete with other applicants. To stand out I have picked up a python class and am actively searching for more resume boosters. I have been reading wsj every day as well as books such as The Art of Persuasion, Shoe Dog and Talent is Overrated. I also have my own business. I will take any position in the industries (within reason) that I can land.

What else can I do to make an impression? What can I do to educate myself further?

I find that I can't even get past most preliminary resume screenings which sucks because of how hard I'm working to make up ground, I have had countless people review my resume and give me the thumbs up. I have cold e-mailed and gotten on calls with people in multiple industries that just say keep doing what I'm doing, but there must be something else I'm not conscious of.
