What to do now? - Unable to land any summer opportunities

So up to this point I haven't been been able to land any summer opportunities and I better start thinking what to do next. I need some ideas

Here is a quick sketch of my background: -Undergrad senior international student at a non target school. GPA 3.74 Finance / Int Business. -Not related experience (can't work outside campus due to Visa restrictions)

After graduation I would be able to finally work outside campus. I have managed to have couple interviews through networking and my own merits, however no luck for this fellow monkey. I will be graduating school after this summer and since is mid March already I believe I don't have much options left than go back to my own country.

What are some alternative paths to investment banking? Any ideas about other jobs I could apply , or maybe even some other Boutiques that are not done recruiting?

You would be dumb to not accept a job simply because it is not investment banking. You will graduate with a degree in Business, so you should suck it up and get a fucking job in Business to do your OPT if you really care about gaining experienced in your field of study. Your OPT is granted so that you can receive training in any business-related field, so why are dooming yourself because you might not get into IB?

If returning home is a concern to you, you can either apply to graduate school or take a decent job in business. Anyway, the more you waste your time looking for what you can't get, the less time you will have to apply for OPT. Your future employers will rescind any job offers If you don't get your OPT paper work on time.

In my view you choosed the wrong country to go to. Have you looked maybe into Canada/Australia?. If you insist in pseudo-slaving yourself for another 5 years, just get any job you can get, go to industry. I wish you all the best, and out of curiosity would like to ask, what country are you from and why wouldnt you want to go back?.

You are probably right. But i can't change my past decisions, thinking in hindsight you will always find ways in which you could have done better, my dilemma now is what would be the best path from now.

I am from a small country in South America where we barely have a securities market. I am arranging a possible position with the institution that manages the national retirement funds and reinvest them. It might be a way to gain experience but if I want to get serous I need to break in the field outside my country.

illiniPrideWhat's more important to you: breaking into banking or working in this country?

Breaking into the field is more important to me. I wold like to work here in the states, but that would be if I could enjoy the same working conditions as regular citizens. As far as I know working under H1B is like someone else said before "pseudo slavery" . But, If offered the chance, I would probably take it. (sad coming to that realization)

In rare cases, it can be. But you do realize there are a lot of people on H-1Bs working at larger or middle market firms under the same contracts as their American counterparts right ? Any sort of discrimination happens at smaller firms, probably outside Finance.

If you want a job in IB, look for one in other countries too, if you want to work/live in the U.S., focusing on looking for a job. Period.

I was in your situation, graduated in 09' with 1 yr OPT, banks would not give me a chance once they found out I could not work in the country PERMANENTLY. I focused on getting Permanent Residency for a whole year and finally got it recently. Now I'm on the job hunt, and have to answer about the beg work gap on my resume. If I were you I'd apply for the skilled worker program in Canada while you're on OPT, if you don't want to go back to your country.

That is a good advice, I haven't though of the Canadian opportunity, I will look that up. Can you tell me more about your experience?
