Where to look next?
I graduated in 2017 with a masters in engineering in the UK. Got a commercial role in O&G but want to switch to IBD. Only really realised this once I had begun working so don't have any relevant internships. Last year I studied for the IMC (investment management certificate, kind of like foundation for CFA only offered in UK) and have just passed it last week.
My issue is that I'm not really sure where to go next. I was considering and MSc in Finance but I think its too late to study for the GMAT now for 2019 entry. I have been applying for jobs but just don't want to waste any more time so feel I should be studying towards something else that will help me achieve my goal. Right now its looking like GMAT or CFA but not sure how much these will help me in the future.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
An MFin could be an idea but not all require GMAT. I know LSE doesn't require it if you've done a UK undergrad and suggests it if you come from a numerically light degree (which engineering is not). LBS also gives GMAT/GRE waivers based on academic excellence so if you got a First and have the numerical skills of an engineer you should be good to go. Double check with the unis you were thinking of applying for.
One switch you could make that may let you bypass the MFin would be to go to an O&G/Energy M&A boutique. You have the industry knowledge, the numerical skills and can learn the details on the job/on your own. Look into; I may be wrong but based on your background it seems doable
