Which BBs are most/least elitist for FO...
Out of curiosity:
With regards to front office positions, when it comes to university name does anyone have an idea of which BBs have the strongest preference for students from top targets?
And which do you think are the most willing to hire from outside the usual group of elite schools?
This is only regarding front office positions.
Not a BB, but out of all firms I'm aware of, the answer would be Blackstone, hands down.
As I understand it, all the top BB's are pretty egalitarian about hiring. They'll always give a very good non-target applicant a chance. It's the top boutiques like Lazard, Greenhill, Gleacher, etc. that are a bit more elitist about hiring.
Yeah I'm aware that top boutiques are different. Just wanted to see if anyone has a view on differences between BBs (including European wannaBBs) when it comes to hiring and school name.
BBs are pretty egalitarian about hiring? Interesting, I've not heard that before.
Lazard/Greenhill
The smaller/worse banks are more concerned with hiring from targets - because they tend to have less training. My school was a target and even for on-campus recruiting the MMs and firms like Dresdner would only interview econ/math/engineering majors with high GPAs, while Goldman would interview and even offer to people who did Anthropology or whatever. Firms with good training and a strong culture of indoctrinating analysts (for lack of a better word) will be more able to identify talent from a wider base and also to make that talent do what it wants.

No, Goldman does not interview Anthropology majors and other bullshit majors. I know kids with a 3.7+ GPA Econ majors from Ivy's that did not even get a first round interview with Goldman. I honestly doubt any anthropology major has ever worked for Goldman
Plain and simple. Anyone from a target school (or even non-target for that matter) can attest to that fact. Goldman interviews everyone. It's probably the MOST egalitarian investment bank on the street, always looking to hire the best talent regardless of background. They know their brand-name is so good, it'll swamp any perceived "lack in prestige" (I cringe as I say this, sorry) that may come from an individual's background.
You don't know what you are talking about.
Seconded.
Actually, when I looked up Goldman's analyst profiles on their website (probably about a year ago), they had a lot of random (not state, but where-the-heck-is-that) schools with a lot of differet majors. I was stunned.
Goldman definitely takes random majors. I've seen English, history, and geography all go over to goldman from my school. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Hank Paulson was an English major..who knows.
Are there any non-targets at Laz/Ghill/Evercore?
Lazard has a more broad search base, and interviews kids from a wide variety of schools (though less than some BBs). Doesn't mean that they will take anybody, but if a diamond in the rough is to be found..
I think that places like Evercore are the most elitist because they are prestigious, but hire very few people - I couldn't even get an interview despite a strong connect inside.
Top regional BB offices tend to be pretty elitist as well.
The major I think also depends on how your school is composed. At penn for example, it is pretty brutal(relatively) for people in the college to go through OCR when compared to Wharton students. If you're an English major at harvard or williams tho, the game is obviously changed.
Not to flog a dead horse but as I said I went to a target it's pretty stupid for you to even try to jump in and contradict.
Sincerely yours,
A Social Science major from a target who got to Goldman superday
you must be so proud, I hope they let you take away some GS stationery
Joefish- you're comment is completely uncalled for. fp175's comment about making it to the GS superday is completely relevant to this conversation.
I have seen people call you out on things before but it's really time to stop being an imbecile. Why don't you try and contribute to the discussion instead of always showing how tough you are... we all know how tough you are so you can stop.
Although those comments are much better than his usual comments repeating some bullshit he heard second hand from 'many people' (his most common source).
