Will having a part time job look bad when looking for a new job in finance?
So I currently have a pretty good career going for myself right now. I have a somewhat prestigious job and have a good career trajectory in front of me.
The thing is, I want to get a weekend job at Target. I don't need the extra money or anything, I just want to work there because it'd be getting my old college job back which was a lot of fun. My old buddy is still there and does it part time on top of his salaried day job because it's a blow off job.
My concern is that if I try to job hop to an associate level role in 2 years, is that I'll get dinged if they find out I worked in retail after ive already started my career. I obviously wouldn't put Target on my resume or anything, but I'm worried that their background check would show I worked there simultaneously with my real job.
Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!
I don't think that it would be necessarily bad per se, but what I do think is that you have a really good and convincing answer for the people that are promoting you to an associate level role. If you don't, they might think that there is something wrong.
I don't think you will get auto-dinged, but this could become an issue and it certainly is very strange. What happens if you need to work weekends in your current position and you get a shift on Target. It's gonna look bad on you.
Btw, where are you located? US or Europe?
I've been in the US a while now.
If i had to work on a weekend for my real job, I'd definitely just skip my Target shift or call out because of priorities. My main concern was if a new employer ran a background check and saw Target on there along with my real jobs. I wouldn't want that to be a red flag
Tell them you were only doing it for the employee discount
This comment didn't get enough love lmao
Its strange, but not an auto-ding. As long as you are fully focused on your main job and its responsibilities.
Not sure that you have to necessarily list that part time job on your resume.
