According to my recruitment spreadsheet, in about half of the cases regarding my background, the clearing agency revealed their client to my reference. I am not entirely sure whether the reference asked for this information or it was given out.
In one case the clearing firm called me instead of my reference and introduced themselves as "company xy working on behalf of bank z".

How do you request the file from the background check agency?
If negative feedback is coming to the agency, they would provide this feedback to you anyway and a form to explain the situation.
You could just ask, OR, just pay for an online background check against yourself.
