Would a 7 and 63 help get in the door.

This is my first post on this site so I will give a little background on myself.

I went to the University of Georgia. Graduated with an undergraduate degree in Economics. I am finishing my MBA at Georgia State University. I currently work for a mortgage bank but am positive that I want to enter Ibanking. I am willing to do whatever it takes to get on board and I have the chance to go ahead and secure my 7 and 63. Will this help my chances during an interview?

Also, when I begin to search for jobs how should I approach the application process? Should you simply send your resume with a cover letter to HR? Should I call and try and talk to some analysts? I would appreciate a little adivice!

thanks

sleepyguybretake college and bschool. try harder and end up at HBS

Open your mouth please.... i need to take a crap in your mouth to shut you up... and i will shut you up, there's no question about that. You are truly the biggest loser on this board.

depends on where you want to work? In new york? No one in Ny is familiar with either schools. I would try in atlanta first.

Haha just because he doesnt go to Wharton/Stanford/HBS/NYU doesnt mean they aren't familiar with those schools!

Despite what people say on this forum , not everyone in NYC (~8 million people) has a graduate degree at an Ivy. Not everyone in I-banking for that matter.

7/63 is like taking a test for alcohol or drug education after you start college. if you fail it they slap you on the wrist but its just something to make sure you know the ground rules. but you have to get into college first. i think a 7/63 actually requires firm sponsorship to be taken. if you're not with some broker dealer in the first place, you can't get the license.

there are lots of reputable colleges.....i know my bank interviews at about 20-30 different schools (b/w actual on campus and resume drop). And I think ivys are overated. But I can promise it's going to be hard to get a job at an ibank in NY with university of georgia and georgia state university on your resume!

Have you looked at working at SunTrust or at a smaller firm in Atlanta or Charlotte? Seems like you'd have a much better shot there, as there may be alumni in those locations and they may be more interested in hiring locally.

Thank you for the input. I would also ask that sleepyguyb not reply to my post.

I don't anticipate getting on with a NY firm. At the best I am hoping for a smaller local Atlanta based firm. I know my GPA is below average - partially due to the fact that I started college early, was unfocused, but graduated at 20.

I got an interview last year with JP Turner - I didn't make it to the next level but now I think I know why. I didn't fully understand the business and wasn't really ready for that interview.

My question still remains - what would be the best way to get an interview with a smaller firm? Should I stick with just sending my resume or should I try more unorthodox approaches?

Try calling the office. If it is a smaller office a secretary or assistant should answer, and they may direct you to a live person in HR or a recruiter. If you can get that, then try to talk with him/her about your career interests and see if you can get lunch or come in for a shadow or informational interview.
