Would banks rescind an offer if they found out you were applying elsewhere for FT?
Have a return offer signed for mid BB london. Thinking about applying to buyside and top BB FT roles for the hell of it but worried that my offer may get pulled if they find out (I think its a very low chance of this, but also very low chance I get an another offer anyway).
Shouldn't be an issue, but you need to be secretive about your recruiting.
Applying to buyside is fine. To another bank can be a problem (as they’re more likely to let your current firm know)
There is no issue - this isn't a problem regardless or whether it's for a buyside or sellside role (as another user has suggested).
There's no secret network of HR teams that share data on candidates / employees (I'm no personal data expert but that smells bad even writing it). Banks can and do expect attrition in their full time offers and take this into account in their recruiting efforts - I've even had this conversation with our grad recruitment teams (i.e. they ask us to try to keep in touch with candidates to reduce the risk they'll continue recruiting).
Yeah but what if someone from firm you're recruiting at calls up someone from original firm to check if return offer is legit for example. Some people at original firm might not like it.
You're right, that's possible. It's also possible that you interview with a banker who has a buddy at the MM and who is just a bad person and calls that buddy just for the jokes.
But I've never heard of either happening (it would be unprofessional and - hopefully this is obvious - nasty as it potentially hurts badly someone at the very start of their career). HR would never do this, so you need to believe that the bankers you're interviewing with are stupid or unpleasant enough to actually do this. And then you need to believe that the person they asked knew who you were (or cared enough to find out) and had the power to rescind the offer.
So, you're right to be cautious and value the offer you have (especially at the start of your career and in this market). But I feel like telling you "it's fine to reapply" is telling you "it's fine to cross roads". There's a risk you get run over, but I'm still going to cross roads.
