America: Why Aren’t You Protesting?

Everyone is too worried about how they are going to pay the bills and have enough comfort distractors to keep on convincing themselves everything is 'okay'

oilpriceAs noted by Richard Heinberg on June 22nd, 2011, the media has lacked the ability to connect the economic situations in the Middle East and their uprisings to what is happening in Europe.

oilpriceI would avoid the word “Revolution” in the case of the Middle Eastern uprisings, seeing as no dramatic systemic changes have taken place, only the ousting of dictators.

oilpriceSame as I would avoid the words of social upheaval in the case of European protests, which have been quite calm and only demanding to maintain the social safety nets produced through years of labor struggle.

oilpriceRather, the odd occurrence is the ostensibly quiet population of the United States who are in many cases having the same economic problems and austerity based government solutions. This a place where the media does want to ask the public the question, “Why aren’t you protesting?”

Because the millions of unemployed or underemployed people are pacified by government assistance that does a pretty good job at hiding problems. If people had to wait in line at a soup kitchen instead of receiving food stamps the White House (No FBI plz) would probably be on fire right now.

Because people still love to live here.

No matter what anyone says about our economy, medicare, or standard of living, millions of people come here every year because it is simply thought of as the greatest place to start your life.

While some may see it as patriotic to protest over some hard times as of late, others would see it as a cop out. We are going through hard times; we have before; we have gotten out of it before, we'll do it again.

While people waste time complaining about how badly we are hurting as a country, others are actually getting things done and putting us back on track.

So stop whining and asking people to protest in the greatest country on the planet.
