Apartment living - noise from neighbors

For those that live in a high-density apartment or condo community, can you hear your neighbors? Prior to moving into my new apartment, I lived in a masonry built shit-house that was built in the early 1900s. Noise was never an issue for the 5 years I've lived there.

Now, I can hear my neighbors upstairs, and I can hear other neighbors through the adjacent partition walls. I believe my living room wall adjoins my neighbor's bedroom. Sometimes I can hear her having a conversation on her cell phone. It's not so clear that I can make out what she is saying, but it's still annoying. I imagine she can hear my TV/Music from the living room, tho she has not yet said anything.

Is this normal? Is this just the cost of living in a high-density building? I always knew developers were cheaping out on materials, but holy shit I never imagined this level of noise transfer.

Yes, I can hear them all the time. The girl next door fights with this guy all the time, and I hear banging from the people downstairs. It sounds like a sledge hammer but it’s not. I can hear their twins crying too which late at night is super annoying when I’m trying to sleep.
