Best Books for Mental Toughness

What books have you read that are good for developing more mental toughness?  I have a lot of marathon training coming up and want to find a way to train harder and I think one place I am lacking is in the mental toughness space.

Yeah I read that one, and I know this is going to be a hot take that is probably going to get me some MS, but I was not a big fan of the book.  To me it just wasn't that motivating as, I don't really think that the speaks to a healthy way of living out life.  Sure It does a great job about pushing yourself, but honestly Its not really a way a lot of us can live IMO.

Totally fair point! I loved it for the storytelling and seeing his growth through his life especially from childhood which I somewhat relate. Mental toughness right haha? Still the book that stands out the most for me. Good luck with the search!

If you like the SOG stuff you should read secret commandos by John Plaster, its awesome, crazy stories

Also the books by John stryker, Across the fence is great.

These guys are on a whole nother level, even for special forces standards.

The podcasts with Jocko are cool, also his interview with the cleared hot podcast is worth the watch.

You see the shock and awe from  other former special forces guys when they hear how hard these guys were.some real life Rambo shit.

during covid I began doing long distance running because my weight equipment was a bit delayed. listening to jocko read passages from about face where they talked about the korean war or when he talked about the chechen conflicts makes running up a hill in a country club neighborhood seem so bitch. if you're paying attention, the thought "this isn't that bad" will enter your mind and help you push through.

I cannot consider myself tough, but I am tougher than I once was, what helped me was making myself uncomfortable, whether that's time in the sauna, distance running, hard workouts, learning a new skill, etc., all of that helps harden you. reading a book (unless the book is stretching you) will not accomplish that. it may give you the motivation you need to do that hard thing, but if I were you, I'd look at some of the books mentioned as an add-on

that said, other books that really make you feel insignificant are usually about war, marine sniper by charles henderson, spanish civil war by paul preston, about face by hackworth, etc., the more gruesome and real, the better.
