Best places to live for the Summer NYC
Hey everyone,
Been looking for subleases in Manhattan near Midtown, Financial District and adjunct areas.
Everything is very expensive (as expected)
Any recommendations on where I should live for the summer while I do my SA stint ?
Ideally I would live with roommates to lower cost of rent
Thanks in advance.
Swing and a miss - OP, also in the same boat. Looking for something in Gramercy / Murray for a Midtown office but open to anything that is nice and relatively affordable. Airbnb doesn't have a whole of options right now either
Really depends on where your work is - FiDi and Midtown are at opposite ends of the city. Go on Google Transit and click the subway option, you don't want a 10+ block walk to the subway station and I'd avoid anything that will require you to transfer at Grand Central or Penn. Look for something with a direct route on 1 subway and minimal walking to station, you'll quickly find out it is much much easier/faster to go north/south than east/west. Anywhere on Manhattan (below top half of Central Park for convenience) is really fair game. Most nightlife is downtown (East Village, West Village, Meatpacking) if that's a consideration.
Also if you are going Airbnb route you need to book it ASAP. If someone books a random weekend in July, that unit goes off their long term rental market, so don't wait until your signing bonus to get this locked down.
I’m gonna be working by Midtown, any recommendations ?
Use google maps from different neighborhoods routed to your office and you can get a sense. It’s the only way because some of the nuances of the subway system can make commutes longer/shorter from neighborhoods that are very close to one another.
Nice, Midtown is pretty commutable so you have options. Definitely cross out FiDi, there's absolutely nothing there on weekends and silly to go all the way uptown every day. I'd stay above ~23rd street so your commute is reasonable. The below areas will be in your price range.
Murray Hill, just stay close enough to the subway stations so you're not blocks and blocks away
Hells Kitchen, don't go too far west - near Columbus Circle is a very nice area
even Midtown itself you can do pretty well. Just do not get somewhere walking distance and plan to walk home at night, always Uber - there has been some increased violence in the city
Start clicking on apartments you like and check out the commute, it'll help you get a better feel for the subway routes anyway
What’s the furthest commute I could realistically do for the summer? Would 40 min be too long?
I definitely wouldn't pay rent to commute 40 min, if it is your parents' house that's a different story
For SA I'd try to keep morning commute around 20 min door to door. When you're FT you have a little more freedom to come in later, but as an SA you need to show up early so live close
Thanks for the reply. My college apt that I’ll be paying rent for anyways is 40 min away, so I don’t want to be paying double rent if I don’t have to. About how early should I be expecting to get in every day?
