Board liberals, who do you want as the Democratic nominee in 2024?

[Hostility free thread]

Recent polling has indicated that a significant (~a third or so) of Democrats want a different candidate in 2024. Let's just assume that Kamala is off the table unless the party power brokers all start doing crack.

Who would you want in 2024? Biden again, or would you prefer it if he declined to run?

Biden got us out of Afghanistan, got us better infrastructure (both of his predecessors failed at this) and got us a strong spending bill to get us out of COVID.  If we get some good progress on childcare, paid leave, and drug price negotiation, it will have been a great first year, the best in many years.

(The little Ben Shapiros on here will cry inflation, but will ignore the fact that every other country has it and that Trump signed a 2.3 trillion tax cut straight to the deficit.  But you know what?  The worker shortage is a good thing.  Wages have been going down for god knows how long and workers rights in this country is a joke.  It's about time the workers have an upper hand, and companies are going to have to treat their workers better now.)

So I say keep him, assuming he's still healthy enough.  We need someone who can work with moderate and progressive politicians to get things done.

Would you not prefer if he declined to run for "age and health" reasons and instead have someone young and spry step in? (Pete Buttigieg for example)

The Afghanistan withdrawal and fallout was so viscerally shocking that otherwise friendly media dropped the script and shit on the administration. And you're severely understating the current supply chain crisis and inflation issues - normal apolitical people are talking about this constantly. People feel it. Progressives are pissed because BBB looks like it might not pass in the wake of the recent elections and inflation at a 30 year high. When you say "if he's healthy enough"... he's arguably not healthy enough now. Right wing media is shitting on him currently for saying "negro" while discussing the Negro Leagues, but that's not the most shocking part of that clip. What's disturbing is that he just seems completely out of it and barely coherent. You can have him hopped up on pills for a two hour debate and he can look fine, but you can't do that through four years of the presidency. It's bad now and only going to get worse.

I'm aiming to be non-partisan/ideological here - if I were in the shoes of a progressive Democrat or even a moderate Democrat I would probably be hoping that he doesn't run. There are surely people who would be more effective at public messaging, more effective at dealing with the various factions of the party, and more effective at pushing through a left wing agenda.

(For the same reason - while I have infinite appreciation for Trump dragging the party towards populism and away from neoconservatism, I hope he doesn't run in 2024)

Afghanistan was the failure of the three previous presidents who spent over a trillion dollars on nation building and ended up with a puppet state that couldn't last even a month without US soldiers babysitting them.  By comparison, the Soviets' government in Afghanistan which was by no means a success lasted 3 years without Soviet troops, after the Soviet government collapsed.  It may not have been the popular thing to do, but it was the right thing to do.  20 years is far too long to be stuck in that cesspool, and Biden would not have been able to win there without a troop surge, so it makes sense to just take the loss and leave.

And once again, companies will need to make some changes to the ways workers are treated in this country in order to end this.  We used to have the teamsters union, now we have "sweatshops on wheels", is it any surprise there is a shortage of truck drivers?  Even bankers at JPMorgan are quitting.  That's supposed to be one of the best jobs in the country.  If you think the Republicans who support 7.25$ an hour would be effective at all in stopping worker shortages, you're delusional.

Republicans have always been better at spreading their message, I don't deny that.  We are having stock market records and the best labor market in our lifetime, Biden definitely needs to improve his message.

You're a clown Drumpfy and probably the only person in America to still support potato in chief. Strong spending bill to get us out of COVID? Really? The spending bill got us out of COVID? Not the fact that the economy is finally opening up after a brutal lockdown all of 2020? Got us out of Afghanistan? Yeah and he severely bungled the withdrawal, leaving behind helpless Americans, military equipment and vast mineral reserves for our enemies to take advantage of. As for inflation, there was no inflation when Trump was President. And wages were still going up. You're utterly detached from reality if you think that the administration right now is even remotely competent.

You're utterly detached if you think that Build Back Better plan, which is fully paid for, will contribute to inflation, but Trump's 2.3 billion unpaid tax cuts won't.

Why is inflation and the debt only a problem when the spending benefits normal people?

And frankly, 20 years and a trillion dollars in Afghanistan is far too long.  I'd rather not have kids dying over there to pay for college.

I’m moderate, but would welcome mayor Pete. If Biden or harris get nominated I’ll be voting republican, unless trump gets the republican nomination.. then.. I just stay home I guess

He’s ex-McKinsey so he enjoys management consulting circle-jerking. Which is to say, he’s clueless about operations and execution. As small city mayor he didn’t cover himself in glory. To the contrary, he showed that implementing good policies is actually damn hard. Maybe running US Transportation Department will teach him some things.
