Brainstorming: Latest Very Innovative Technologies?

I'm brainstorming the latest innovative technologies (for a project) and I could really use WSO help. By "latest," I guess I just mean within the last few years. It can even be later, since some things were invented awhile ago, but have caught on more recently.

So far, this is all I got: -- eReaders -- Tablets -- Mobile Computing

jsmort11now YOU want help with your homework...how ironic (I kid)

Hey, I helped you a bunch with yours... Haha, I'm just joking.

loki276][quote=jsmort11]3D printing might work, although thats obviously not widespread yet. The Economist has a special report on this in the most recent issue http://www.economist.com/node/18114221[/quote Not sure if that was the article but the most interesting use me this I came across was replacing body parts. It was somewhere in an economist article

Yeah, that's what the short NYT video is about. You guys should all check it out -- it's awesome!

Technology seems so broad. Hardware? Software? Robotics (didn't talk enough about robotics yesterday)? Military Technology? Biotech? Are cool apps considered innovative technology?

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

I have no idea. I think any will work. It should be something with the potential to "change the world." It is for a writing assignment, but I'm not asking anyone to do anything other than help me brainstorm technologies. I intend to research and write the entire thing myself, it's just that I'm pretty ignorant about innovation and am looking for some technologies to explore.

Definitely check out the economist link above then. It talks a bit about how 3D printing has the potential to nearly eliminate economies of scale by making mass production irrelevant (The Economists words not mine, not sure if I agree or disagree with that). That would be a pretty massive world change.

SteinigCloud. That's where everything is heading.

This.

The usage of software from remote areas is definitely the future. Pretty soon we're going to be running Windows without it actually being installed in your computers. Couple implications of this trend:

  • Security (as observed by Intel's acquisition of McAfee)
  • Increased hardward storage for cloud providors as demand for hard drives to store data increases (look into SaaS, PaaS, IaaS)
  • Online "cloud" market places. I am guessing it would be something like the iTunes marketplace but with applications of bigger size and variety (i.e. buying the rights to running MS Office remotely)
  • Relating to the marketplace above, this new online marketplace will not only give more opportunities to software developers to market their product easily, it will also change the way companies such as Microsoft deliver their products to customers.

I could go on forever but the above 3 are ideas that will be significant IMO. If you apply this tend to the smartphone space, the possibilities are endless.

Hope this helps.

I was going to say cloud, but you picked 3D printing so I guess you got your idea.

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Cloud computing is, no doubt, revolutionary. I'm just too excited about all the stuff they're already producing with 3D printing to think about anything else...

I feel like a little kid haha

jsmort11If we could keep this thread going that would be sweet. I'm pretty interested in the intersection of technology and economics. Econ, if you wanna share your progress you'd have at least one person interested.

I'm interested. Any ideas where to start?
