Budgeting in NYC as an AN1
How tf do you budget? Let's take a look...
Cash inflow every month: +6000
Rent: -3000
Uber around the city each month: - 500
Eating out once a week assuming a normal sit-down restaurant for a month: - 250
Lunch everyday assuming $20 a day: -600
UberEats: -400
Clothes / misc purchases: -1000
That's pretty much it. How do you save anything?
You need more roommates. It’s also okay to spend your entire base salary. As long as you bank your bonus you’re good
Yeah, tell Blair ANs and ASOs to bank their bonus 😂
Get roommates and relax on the Ubers. Your Ubers are almost 1K
$1,000 a month in miscellaneous expenses is a big bucket. If a client gave me a general ledger with "miscellaneous purchases" on it which was ~17% of sales, I would want some granularity there.
$3K on rent is on the high side, but not that unusual if you live alone. If you don't live alone, when are you going to invite us for the rooftop pool party?
On Ubers, I can get from Midtown to the southern tip of the Island for $28 one-way. How do you incur 20 of these that wouldn't just be a flow-through from workplace reimbursement? That's like 10 trips a month, which would be one every single weekend day. Can't you take the subway a couple times or go to some neighborhood digs for your partying?
Lunch every day at $20 a day is steep. There's sandwich spots where you can go for $12 and others at $17, but $20 every day is a bit much unless you're shooting out the lights on the weekends.
Point taken on miscellaneous expenses but I do not think $3K rent is unreasonable for a 1B in a 2B in Manhattan...Everywhere I looked the minimal 2B2B is 6.5k - 7k.
194 apartments in Midtown alone on StreetEasy that are below $3,000. You get economies of scale with more bedrooms. Need I say more?
Am I supposed to agree with this (sorry for harshness)?
Roommates, take the subway, meal prep, don’t spend $1k/mo on clothes and misc, eat local rather than delivery
You don't spend any money on bars / clubs / alcohol / weed?
Based
My personal An 1 monthly budget: Rent & Utilities: 3.1k-3.2k Food: $300-$350 (Pack lunch) Transportation: $150 (Walking commute) Miscellaneous: $400 (Dry cleaning, Amazon, etc.) Travel: $350 (I don’t go out, just travel) Saving: $1,500 (Excluding 8% to 401k)
I think you can save on a few areas. Cheaper place since you have a roommate. Even a $5k 1br between two is reasonable and can be nice. Also eat the marginal 3-4 meals at home, keep it to one nice dinner per week with friends not alone, and try to avoid Ubers when the train is a viable option.
My breakdown - I could save more too. I budget within my base not projecting the bonus or carry which will go right into the IRA once any check hits.
$7100 post tax monthly inflow -2800 rent. Personal “1br” (long studio with multiple rooms) -1500 normal lunches and dinners - 300 household stuff - 400 nice restaurants - 400 weekend fun including Ubers (don’t use during the week) - 200 clothing - 100 subway Save 1000+ a month
One massive improvement is I no longer have a girlfriend. Has saved me thousands.
